PRESERVATION SERVICES BRIDGEPORT NATIONAL BINDERY

Preservation Services Bridgeport National Bindery recognizes that libraries and individuals have a need for conservation and preservation work. Not all institutions can afford to have a professionally trained preservation librarian or a fully staff conservation lab, so strive to provide these services to our customers through conservation treatment, consultation, training, collection assessment and other preservation services. We work proactively with you tailor a suite of services to meet your specific needs. Please contact us and let us help you meet your preservation goals.

Services Offered:

•    Preservation Consultation and Training – Brian Baird has been actively involved
in library conservation and preservation activities for more than 20 years. He
served as a conservator at Princeton University before moving to the University
of Kansas to establish their nationally recognized preservation program. He
also taught conservation and preservation courses in the KU Museum Studies
Program and at the Emporia State University School of Library and Information
Management. At Bridgeport National Bindery, Brian oversees the Conservation
Department which offers libraries of all sizes full conservation services for their
     rare and general collections materials.

     Consultation Services include:

       Collection Condition Surveys
We will assist a library in developing an assessment tool designed to meet
the specific informational needs of that library, and will then assess
the library’s collections and preservation services to help them develop a
          preservation plan.
       Preservation and conservation training
BNB is eager to assist in providing training and internship opportunities for
          conservators and preservation librarians.
       Preservation planning
BNB can assist a library in establishing a preservation plan that will guide
its preservation efforts for 3-5 years.
       Conservation Treatment
Bridgeport National Bindery has two professional conservators on staff and
several trained technicians to assist in the conservation treatment and
restoration of materials in need of higher-end treatment. All treatments are
performed using archival materials and reversible treatment methods that
are in accordance best practices of the conservation profession and the
AIC Code of Ethics. Libraries are encouraged to send their damaged
          treasures in for a quote.

Collections Conservation Treatment:

•    These treatments are designed for older, semi rare materials from either
general collections or special collections. The treatments follow the latest
conservation treatment standards and practices. They are reversible, us
archival materials, and are not damaging and as non-invasive as possible.
Our primary collections conservation treatments include:

Conservation Case Binding – A new binding is placed on an older semi-
rare item. Materials are chosen that will provide a look sympathetic to the
         original binding.
Conservation Recase (Reback) – The original binding is restored,
strengthened, and reattached to the text-block. The binding is designed to
be retain as much of the original cover as possible, but it is not a full
         restoration.
